Deciding to trade in your free summer days for a 9-5 can be hard to swallow if you’re not in the right internship. Finding an internship is not an easy task, so you want to make sure your countless hours of writing cover letters, searching for openings, and interviews are worth it. Below are a few pointers I’ve found to be helpful for when finding the right internship.

A Learning Experience

It is important to find an internship that is going to provide you with the learning experience that you want to receive. If a company offers you an internship but isn’t going to provide you with the experience you want, don’t settle.

Time Is Money – Use It Wisely

It is important to keep looking for an internship that has everything you are looking for because time is money. Whether the internship is paid or unpaid, at the end of the internship, you should feel accomplished and excited about your experience. If an internship offers hands-on experience that allows you to apply what you have learned in the classroom – it will be worth your time.

Your Future Career Depends On It

Finding an internship within your field is important because you will be able to get a glimpse of what your future career may look like. This experience is important to help you recognize whether or not your degree will be able to provide you with a job you will enjoy. An internship is also a great opportunity to discover how a company works and can tell you a lot about the kind of company you may want to work for.

Build Up Your Resume

Internships are huge resume builders. Employers like to see that you have experience and knowledge gained from outside the classroom. When choosing an internship, it is not only important to choose a company that will provide you with experience pertaining to your field, but also one that will make an impression on future employers.

The Right Company Culture

Company culture is an important factor when looking for a company in which you will be spending a majority of your summer. A company with a fun personality, like Matchbook, is a perfect fit for me because space is set up for collaboration and a stress-free environment even within the fast-paced nature of the business.

When it comes down to it, there are so many factors that play into finding the right internship. Personally, interning at Matchbook Creative has provided me with an experience that I would have never received in the classroom. The right internship should not only reaffirm that the career path you have chosen is right for you, but also paint the picture of what to look for in a company when applying for jobs after college. I’ve found that these tips are all factors in determining just any internship from the right internship.
