Finding an internship is hard, especially one that helps you to improve and cultivate your skills. For me, I found that and more at Matchbook Creative. Through this internship, I have had hands-on experiences and opportunities to work with all the departments of the Matchbook family.
Just in the few months that I have been with Matchbook, I have had a variety of experiences. In my first week, I was a part of a media training with up-and-coming local artists featured in the Arts Council of Indianapolis’ Art and Soul Fellowship Program. I have also been able to sit in on meetings with IndyHumane, a leading voice for animal welfare. I’ve written media pitches, news releases, and went on my first photoshoot, where I learned about the importance of lighting, was trained on new equipment and how to utilize space for different shots.
Some of my favorite experiences have been attending industry events. I attended the 2019 ADDYs, where I had the chance to help with registration, network and see the industry’s top advertising professionals awarded for their hard work. I attended a PRSA “meet the media” event, at which I was able to hear from current journalists in Indianapolis. There, I learned how journalists prefer to receive pitches and build relationships with public relations pros.
I have learned a few things about myself through this internship. I like to think that I thrive under pressure and that some of my best work comes from those times, but that is not always the case. I now know the quality of my work depends on me being careful and taking my time. I am also learning how to be a more productive member of a team. Whether it be a client pitch or working together on a campaign, each member of the team has to contribute for the agency to succeed. Finally, I have learned that I would love to work in an agency!
My biggest draw to Matchbook was the people. I walked into the warmest and most welcoming group of people. The team here is always ready and willing to help you succeed in any capacity possible. I love being able to ask questions without feeling like I am bothering them or should already know the answer. I have felt a part of the team, and I am glad I have the opportunity to grow and learn under such talented people.
Whether you’re looking for your first internship or your third, Matchbook is a place that allows you to grow or strengthen your career skills. Applications for Matchbook Creative’s summer internships are due March 15 – I encourage you to apply!
